MATTHEW SPENDER ON GORKY
Apr 26, 2010 6:30pm
talk/event Following his emigration from Armenia to America in 1920, Arsile Gorky was a key figure in the New York art world during the 1930s and 40s. With strong links to contemporaries like Willem de Kooning and European war exiles such as the Surrealist Andre Breton, his connection to the worlds of Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism makes him a pivotal figure. Gorky expert, biographer and son-in-law Matthew Spender will lead a tour through the exhibition, combining a critical assessment of his work with personal reflections on the artist’s life and numerous myths that surround him.
