On-site research in the "haunted" gallery by Lara Smithson, Simona Sharafudinov, Rhona Eve Clews, and Maria Positano; curated by Sasha Burkhanova-Khabadze.
This art experiment started with a belief: buildings inscribe themselves with their occupants; so do the exhibition spaces. A gallery built for the purpose of showing art configures a certain kind of relations between the concrete structure and its inhabitants. But a “haunted” gallery is a scenario of confrontation between the two narratives — of the building, and its guests: artists, artworks, audiences. To trace and locate the source of this confrontation, the artists-newcomers explored the haunted gallery — through the technologies of co-presence, seizure, mimicking, edit — and re-enacted the existing stories, objects and relations in the space.
