Click to enlargeGIBSON / MARTELLI (IGLOO) : VISITOR
Until 1 April 2012
Inspired by the artists' travels to the snowy mountains of the Canadian Rockies and developed during research at the Banff Arts Centre, VISITOR investigates the experience of place: real and invented panoramas illustrate the beauty and strangeness of the natural world. Vermilion Lake is a full-size replica of a trappers’ cabin, which houses an interactive virtual environment including a rowing boat which visitors are invited to row. where the bears are sleeping is a film depicting monochromatic imagery of glaciers, forests and frozen landscapes. Employing techniques used in video games, the exhibition plays with our apprehension of different forms of reality.

Gibson / Martelli work together as igloo. Their first work won them a BAFTA nomination and their installations, video works, online projects and performances have featured in international exhibitions and festivals including the 52nd Venice Biennale. VISITOR is a touring exhibition produced in association with artsdepot. Commissioned by the Henry Moore Foundation and Arts Council England. Supported by The Banff Centre, Canada.

FAMILIAR VISIONS
Jul 3 - Sep 5, 2010
This exhibition showcases the Sussex landscape paintings of much-loved British artist Eric Ravilious, alongside his son James's photographs of the Devon landscape. Featuring major loans as well as works from the Towner Collection, one of the world's foremost holdings of Ravilious work, the show will reveal a deep-seated love of the land inherent to both father and son.

NEW EYES
Oct 22, 2011 - Apr 22, 2012
"The real journey of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes" - Marcel Proust

Through Towner’s partnership with the Blue Monkey Network, an artist network based in Eastbourne, six artists have been given the unique opportunity to get to know our collection and curate an exhibition at Towner.

Taking inspiration from Proust, the artists have created a stimulating display reflecting on the many layers of the artistic process. Including works by Grayson Perry, Eduardo Paolozzi and Eric Ravilious’s woodblocks and tea cup designs.

WILLIE DOHERTY : DISTURBANCE
Apr 21 - Jun 17, 2012
Private view Fri Apr 20 6pm - 8pm
Twice Turner Prize nominated artist Willie Doherty is renowned for his video installations and photographs. Disturbance surveys his works from the mid 1980s to today, including his most recent video, Ancient Ground, shot last year on the peat bogs of County Donegal.

Doherty’s work is rooted in the politics and topography of his native Derry, but transcends its context to explore universal themes including memory, subjectivity and social concerns – and their manifestation in the natural and constructed landscape.

Presented in association with Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.
