Exchanges sets art and artists together, sometimes in harmony, sometimes in opposition – always with insight and intention. In this evolving exhibition, art that has recently been acquired by the Whitworth is placed in dialogue with selected works from the existing collection.

THE RENO AT THE WHITWORTH

For a period of one year Linda Brogan and a group of local residents, who went to the Reno nightclub in the 1970s and 80s, will occupy the Whitworth.

LI YUAN CHIA: UNIQUE PHOTOGRAPHS

In his lifetime, Li Yuan Chia (1929-1994) travelled from China, to Taiwan, Bologna and London but found his home in a house that he bought in 1972 from Winifred Nicholson in Banks at the far north of Cumbria on Hadrian’s Wall. Now regarded as China’s first conceptual artist, Li Yuan Chia made this house into the LYC Museum and Art Gallery - a place for showing innovative art alongside children’s workshops and his own experimental work.

PEARL ALCOCK

Arriving in the UK from Jamaica in 1958 with £5 in her pocket as part of the Windrush generation, Alcock moved to Brixton to realise her dream of opening a boutique dress shop on Railton Road – an area famous for connecting with London’s LGBTQ+ community.

UNREFORMED: WALLPAPER AND DESIGN

In the middle of the nineteenth century wallpaper design suddenly became diverse. English manufacturers began to excel at the quick production of affordable wallpapers. There was also an ever-increasing availability of things from abroad. This resulted in a dramatic explosion of choice.

CÉZANNE AT THE WHITWORTH

This exhibition celebrates an extraordinary collection of drawings and prints by Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) that has been gifted and placed on long-term loan to the Whitworth by gallerist, collector, author and publisher Karsten Schubert.
